Beginning in January 2021, Benchmark Transitions has shifted its focus to a single-gender treatment model for young adult men to better address the unique challenges facing this growing demographic struggling with substance use, alcohol addiction, chemical dependency and co-occurring disorders.

Since our founding in 1993, we have monitored the climate of substance use among young adults to best meet their needs. Almost three decades later, we continue to see young men especially affected by substance use disorders in the statistics and the studies. As the National Institute on Drug Abuse reports, men have higher rates of use or dependence on illicit drugs and alcohol than women, which puts them at more risk for overdose deaths, and a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that young adults are hit hardest by opioid deaths, with young men accounting for more than two-thirds of all opioid deaths.

Acknowledging this, we are devoting our resources to young adult men’s treatment — from detox, to residential to supportive transitional living and life skills, continuing to provide the full continuum of care for substance use disorders and mental health.

An age-specific program is most effective in tailoring treatment directly to a person’s needs at a unique stage in life, which improves the chances of successful recovery. Young adult specific treatment meets emerging adults where they are as they transition into an independent life. Unlike older generations, drug use in young men can have harmful, lasting impacts on their developing brains. They are still maturing mentally and physically and respond differently to treatment.

Research has identified significant differences between older adults and younger adults with a substance use disorder, which impacts the design of the treatment model. For example, a study in Recent Developments in Alcoholism found that young adults present higher rates of binge use, lower problem recognition and higher rates of comorbid psychiatric problems as compared with adults. They are also more susceptible to peer influence and more focused on immediate concerns than adults. A treatment program tailored to young adults’ specific psychological, developmental and social needs are more likely to result in successful recovery.

The research institution Drug Strategies turned to experts to create core elements for effective drug treatment for young adults, which include: screening and comprehensive assessment to ensure understanding of the full range of issues the youth and family are experiencing; providing comprehensive services that addresses the young adult’s substance abuse problem along with medical, mental health, family and education problems; family involvement; developmentally appropriate services and therapies; staff with strong knowledge of and experience working with young adults with substance use disorders and their families; and programs for care after the formal treatment program is completed to ensure support and successful recovery.

Our clinicians provide age-appropriate, single-gender therapy that helps young men understand the dangerous, life-altering consequences that can occur from their risk-taking behaviors with drugs and alcohol.

Comparison Of Short-term Treatment vs Long-term Supportive Programs

Long-term drug rehab usually involves a minimum of 90 days in a residential treatment setting, while short-term rehab refers to programs that require less than three months of treatment, followed by extended outpatient care.
